Our client’s design for their contemporary master ensuite was based around the beautiful architectural feature of the frameless corner window. The window not only fills the room with tons of natural light, but it also creates the feeling of bringing the outdoors in while bathing in what feels like the tree canopy. For practicality, automatic shades were installed for privacy. The toilet is tucked away in the water closet, but the frosted glass door provides privacy but also allows natural light to fill this space. The spa-like feel of this ensuite was achieved by pairing natural looking surfaces, with crisp white walls.

Our clients are a busy couple who wanted beautiful surfaces without the maintenance. We opted for porcelain floor tile that mimics a beautiful natural stone, textured white porcelain subway tiles for the shower, quartz for the vanity countertop and dark stained walnut cabinetry. The mirrored vanity wall stays true to the minimal pallet and visually creates more space.

Our clients desired a kitchen that would work every day for their busy family of four. They wanted to be able to eat-in the kitchen, and have clear sights to their family room, but also allow them to entertain.  By choosing a U-shaped layout we were able to provide them with plenty of counter space and storage in a highly efficient working triangle. The raised peninsula allows the whole family to eat in the kitchen, but also hides the mess of the kitchen from the adjacent family room. The large window in the kitchen comes right down to the countertop, creating a nice connection to the back yard.

The high gloss white cabinetry is warmed up with the natural grain of the quarter cut walnut base cabinets, and stainless steel kick plates are practical for cleaning.

The kitchen features pull out waste bin drawers under the sink, magic corners for easy access to the base corner cabinets, Intivo drawers for the pantry and convenient pull out.

The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) Ontario Chapter revealed the winners of the 2016 Design Competition at their 13th Annual Design Awards Gala on April 9. Echoing this year’s theme, “Life is just a Blanc Slate, what matters is what you create,” dress code was option white, and the white backdrop put the focus on the designers and their accomplishments.

Over 30 winners from across eight main kitchen and bath categories and six specialty categories, including the prestigious Pinnacle Award and the People’s Choice Award, were honoured and recognized for their creativity and design excellence at the gala event. Entries to the annual competition were judged by a panel of NKBA-certified designers (CMKBD, CKD, CBD) and industry experts. All qualifying projects were scored on various criteria, including NKBA guidelines, safety and ergonomics, elements and principles of design, design planning, creativity and presentation.

By featuring the winning designers at the awards gala, and in this publication, it brings awareness of the importance of professional design to both the consumer and within the industry.

Congratulations to all the 2016 NKBA Ontario Chapter design competition winners.
